A Comparison Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
What is the American Dream? This is a question people have been asking for centuries, but I believe that the more important question is who can truly reach the American Dream. The American Dream isnââ¬â¢t one set belief that is exactly the same for everyone, but that also means that there should not be any limitation on who can accomplish the American Dream. To show evidence of this claim I will use 2 classic novels as examples, The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. While living on this farm he kept a strict schedule to follow every day and used this to stay in shape and earn money (Fitzgerald 173). He later join the military and became a major, but later we find out that he wanted to die in the war (Fitzgerald 66). When he first meet Daisy he was still poor but hid this by wearing his military uniform (Fitzgerald ). He started to date Daisy and feel deeply in love with her, so much that he felt that he was married to her (Fitzgerald 149). He was soon after sent off to fight in World War I and had to leave Daisy. After the war Gatsby was accidentally sent to Oxford instead of home to Daisy (Fitzgerald ). Not knowing if Gatsby was alive or not Daisy started to date a man named Tom Buchanan and later married him. By the time Gatsby finally got in contact with Daisy she was already married to Tom. Gatsby for years was working his way up the social ladder to the top to get to Daisy. He succeeds in getting this wealth and a higher social class and bought a mansion across the lake from Daisy and Tom. A Poet Protesting the Persecution of the Palestinian People Poets from every part of the world from all times of history have written about the issues of oppression and hardships of unfairness and discrimination. It is easy to find writings and poetry by African Americans, Hispanics, Japanese, Chinese, and even Native American poets. These nationalities are very well represented when it comes to poets shouting of the unfair treatment of their ethnic group. However, to find poetry and poets from an ethnic group such as the Palestinians or the Afghanis is not so common, and it is usually these groups that need to be heard the most, because it is generally these people who are being discriminated upon and treated unfairlyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Darwish, being a Muslim, would agree with this. As Darwish expresses in his poem, the land belonged to his ancestorsââ¬âthe Arabs, not exclusively to the ancestors of the Jews. The Palestinian people believe that Ishmaelââ¬â¢s descendants, who include themselves, are also the seed of Abraham (Nakhleh 993). Therefore, the blessings, which included the Holy Land, promised to the descendants of Abraham, belong to those who find ancestry in both Ishmaelââ¬âthe Arabsââ¬âand Isaacââ¬âthe Jews. For this reason, the Israeli claim that the land belongs just to them is false, or so Darwish would argue. In fact, in many of his poems Darwish uses Israelââ¬â¢s Old Testament, ââ¬Å"notably Isaiah and Jeremiah, on whom he frequently calls to condemn Israelââ¬â¢s acts of injustice against the Palestiniansâ⬠(Mattar). Darwish does this because he believes that when the land of Palestine was made into Israel, the land that is rightfully his ancestorsââ¬â¢ was stolen from him and his fellow Palestinians. In 1948, Israelis forced most ââ¬Å"of the Palestinian Arabs from their homes, towns and villages, uprooting an entire population through forcible expulsionâ⬠(Nakhleh 251). Literature Epic Poetry and Ancient China Essay Example For Students
Literature: Epic Poetry and Ancient China Essay The Epic of Galoshes is one of the earliest known literary works. This Babylonian epic poem arises from stories In the Sumerian language. Although the Sumerian stories are older (probably dating to at least 2100 B. C. ), It was probably composed around 1900 BC. The epic deals with themes of heroism, friendship, loss, and the quest for eternal life. Different historical periods are reflected in literature. National and tribal sagas, accounts of the origin of the world and of customs, and myths which sometimes carry moral or spiritual messages predominate in the Burbank eras. The epics of Homer, dating from the early to middle Iron age, and the great Indian epics of a slightly later period, have more evidence of deliberate literary authorship, surviving Like the older myths through oral tradition for long periods before being written down. As a more urban culture developed, academies provided a means of transmission for speculative and philosophical literature in early civilizations, resulting in the prevalence of literature in Ancient China, Ancient India, Persia and Ancient Greece and Rome. Many works of earlier periods, even in narrative form, had covert moral or didactic purpose, such as the Sanskrit Panchromatic or the Metamorphoses of Ovid. Drama and satire also developed as urban culture provided a larger public audience, and later readership, for literary production. Lyric poetry (as opposed to epic poetry) was often the specialist of courts and aristocratic circles, particularly in East Asia where songs were collected by the Chinese aristocracy as poems, the most notable being the Shining or Book of Songs. Over a long period, the poetry of popular pre-literate balladry and song Interpenetrated and eventually influenced poetry in the literary medium. In ancient China, early literature was primarily focused on philosophy. Historiography. Military science, agriculture, and poetry. China, the origin of modern paper making and woodblock printing, produced one of the worlds first print cultures. Much of Chinese literature originates with the Hundred Schools of Thought period that occurred during the Eastern Chou Dynasty (769-269 BCC). The most important of these include the Classics of Confucianism, of Taoism, of Molls, of Legalism, as well as works of military science (e. G. Sun Tutus The Art of War) and Chinese history (e. G. SIAM Quinns Records of the Grand Historian). Ancient Chinese literature had a heavy emphasis on historiography, with often very detailed court records. An exemplary piece of narrative history of ancient China was the Ouzo Chuan, which was compiled no later than 389 BCC, and attributed to the blind 5th century BCC historian Ouzo Cuming. In ancient India, literature originated from stories that were originally orally transmitted. Early genres included drama, fables, sutras and epic poetry. Sanskrit literature begins with the Veda, dating back to 1500-1000 BCC, and continues with the Sanskrit Epics of Iron Age India. The Veda are among the oldest sacred texts. The Scimitars (Vivid collections) date to roughly 1500-1000 BCC, and the circus-Vivid texts, as well as the redaction of the Scimitars, date to c. 000-500 BCC, resulting in a Vivid period, spanning the mid 2nd to mid 1st millennium BCC, or the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The period between approximately the 6th to 1st centuries BC saw the composition and redaction of the two most Influential Indian epics, the Inhabitant AD. In ancient Greece, the epics of Homer, who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey, and Hissed, who wrote Works and Days and Theosophy, are some of the earliest, and most influential, of Ancient Greek literature. Classical Greek genres included philosophy, poetry, historiography, comedies and dramas. Plato and Aristotle authored philosophical texts that are the foundation of Western philosophy, Shop and Poniard were influential lyrical poets, and Herodotus and Discusses were early Greek historians. Although drama was popular in Ancient Greece, of the hundreds of tragedies written and performed during the classical age, only a limited number of plays by three authors still exist: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .postImageUrl , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:hover , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:visited , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:active { border:0!important; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:active , .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u48768e3bd8290b325e42a9225fc6f2bb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry Explication Because I could not stop for death EssayThe plays of Aristotelian provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, the earliest form of Greek Comedy, and are in fact used to define the genre. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German writer and author of the Faust books Roman histories and biographies anticipated the extensive mediaeval literature of lives of saints and miraculous chronicles, but the most characteristic form of the Middle Ages was the romance, an adventurous and sometimes magical narrative with strong popular appeal. Controversial, religious, political and instructional literature reallocated during the Renaissance as a result of the invention of printing, while the mediaeval romance developed into a more character-based and psychological form of narrative, the novel, of which early and important examples are the Chinese Monkey and the German Faust books. In the Age of Reason philosophical tracts and speculations on history and human nature integrated literature with social and political developments. The inevitable reaction was the explosion of Romanticism in the later 18th century which reclaimed the imaginative and fantastical bias of old nuances and folk-literature and asserted the primacy of individual experience and emotion. But as the 19th-century went on, European fiction evolved towards realism and naturalism, the meticulous documentation of real life and social trends. Much of the output of naturalism was implicitly polemical, and influenced social and political change, but 20th century fiction and drama moved back towards the subjective, emphasizing unconscious motivations and social and environmental pressures on the individual. Writers such as Porous, Eliot, Joyce, Kafka and Paralleled exemplify the rend of documenting internal rather than external realities. Genre fiction also showed it could question reality in its 20th century forms, in spite of its fixed formulas, through the enquiries of the skeptical detective and the alternative realities of science fiction. The separation of mainstream and genre forms (including journalism) continued to blur during the period up to our own times. William Burroughs, in his early works, and Hunter S. Thompson expanded documentary reporting into strong subjective statements after the second World War, and post- modern critics have disparaged the idea of objective realism in general.

Nature versus Nurture
Introduction The human race has elicited many unrelenting controversies concerning the different aspects of its existence. These controversies often yield debates that sometimes develop from simple arguments aimed at understanding individual behavioral differences to become politically motivated disputes over distributive justice and societal power (McLeod par. 12).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Nature versus Nurture specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A prime example of this nature of debates is the debate on whether nature or nurture has a greater bearing on the development of the diverse individual behavioral differences that exist. This age-old debate neither shows any indication of ending soon nor identifying which of the two factors has more influence on behavioral differences. Researchers and scholars have conducted numerous studies over the same, but the have not settled this debate. This paper seeks to ex plore this debate in the light of a recent article that appeared in The Wall Street Journal, ââ¬Å"Nature vs. Nurture: New Science Stirs Debate How Behavior Is Shaped; Whoââ¬â¢s an Orchid, Whoââ¬â¢s a Dandelionâ⬠, in a bid to establish what it adds to already existing body of literature on this controversy. A Synopsis of the Article The article in question, Nature vs. Nurture: New Science Stirs Debate How Behavior is Shaped; Whoââ¬â¢s an Orchid, Whoââ¬â¢s a Dandelion, featured in The Wall Street Journal on September 16, 2013 with Jonathan Rockoff as the author. The article opens by noting that researchers are moving closer to explaining how nature rather than nurture has more influence on human behavior as the extent of individualsââ¬â¢ sensitivity to external influences varies based on the biological composition of their nervous system (Rockoff par. 3). As such, some individuals are more susceptible to external influences than others are. Individuals that are m ore susceptible are termed as ââ¬Ëorchidsââ¬â¢ while the less susceptible types are termed as ââ¬Ëdandelionsââ¬â¢ (Rockoff par. 3). A baffling finding is that orchids will perform very poorly in adverse environments, but they will thrive under optimum conditions in contrast to dandelions (Rockoff par. 5). This observation was confirmed by a 2010 study in the Journal of Child Development, which showed children performing poorly under fighting parents, but became best performers under a happier home life. A study by the National Academy of Sciences also supports this position by asserting that under adverse economic conditions, environmentally sensitive mothers (orchids) were very harsh with their children, but under better economic circumstances, they parented their children better than non sensitive mothers (dandelions) (Rockoff par. 7).Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Critics have faulted the evidence provided noting that a more rigorous study is necessary. However, despite such calls from critics, an analysis of 15 studies, which incorporated up to 1200 children as conducted in 2011 by Dr. Van IJzendoorn among others, confirmed that dopamine production in an individual had a bearing on environmental susceptibility (Rockoff par. 20). An Analysis of the Article This article, like other literature on the nature-nurture debate, explicitly outlines the dilemma that researchers and other experts in the field of psychology find themselves in over the issue. Proponents of each side conduct their studies and attempt to pitch their side as the most influential on behavioral development. However, every time a researche r does this, critics find gaping holes in the explanations offered just like in this article. Eventually, the debate remains hanging in the balance without a clear concept of the side that has more influence on behavioral development. This article argues in favor of biological determinism by presenting empirical evidence from several studies, which seems to make it reputable, but critics refute it on the grounds of the credibility of the evidence presented. For instance, it is noted that orchids are susceptible to environmental influence, but the type of influence they are susceptible to is not specified. Assuming that they are susceptible to every form of influence that comes their way would be erroneous as noted by one of the critics (Rockoff par. 17). Personally, I do not agree with the research findings in the article because even though the studies were conducted, they do not present adequate ground for researchers to make the conclusions they made. It is true that dopamine mig ht influence environmental susceptibility as concluded in the article. However, the study also needed to specify the kind of susceptibility it influences because without this element, it follows that all orchids in the same surroundings are supposed to manifest identical traits. Concisely, the findings of the studies are incomplete and are thus unacceptable.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Nature versus Nurture specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The significance of this article insofar as the field of psychology is concerned stems from the fact it stimulates the minds of researchers towards an idea that might have eluded them for a long time. It points out the significance of dopamine in influencing environmental susceptibility among individuals. Though this point does not comprehensively explain how biological determinism plays a bigger role in dictating behavior, it begins to outline how the genetic code of an i ndividual affects how s/he interacts with the environment. In essence, it begins to indicate that nature does not influence behavior, but it determines how the individual interacts or s/he is affected by the environment. In this sense, both genetic composition and the environment interact to determine behavior. This perspective concurs with studies conducted by Evans (423-51) to determine the influence of the physical environment on behavior. The studies were conducted to find out the influence of noise, crowding, and the quality of housing and neighborhood on the behavior of children. The study of the influence of noise on behavior revealed that childrenââ¬â¢s reading abilities and cognitive development are adversely affected by noise through delays in the ability to read and interfering with long-term memory respectively. The studies also found out that teachers in noisy environments become more exhausted, irritable, and impatient with learners, thus affecting the cognitive dev elopment of learners. These studies clearly indicate that the physical environment has a significant bearing on the behavioral development of an individual. This assertion stems from the fact that noise had an effect on the students as well as teachers and crowding had an effect on both the child and the parent. The effect of these environmental factors on the child is magnified by the fact that the child is subjected to the direct influence of the factors coupled with the indirect influence that come from the influence of these factors on the teacher or parent. It is noteworthy to point out that though several children may be subjected to the same noise levels and same extent of crowding, their behavior patterns cannot turn out to be exactly similar. This observation implies that even though the environment may influence behavior as established by these studies, it can only do so depending on every individualââ¬â¢s unique personal characteristics. The effect of the environment i s the same on all, but the behavior of every individual will remain different even if there were some similarities. This assertion means that the influence of the environment combines with an individualââ¬â¢s unique trait to yield a certain behavior pattern. This aspect points to the flaws in the study by Evans (423-51) because it fails to consider that the same environmental factors can still yield different behavior patterns within a group.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Conclusion This paper sought to explore the article on Nature vs. Nurture by Rockoff in a bid to find its placement within the body of literature on this debate in the field of psychology. The article endeavors to pitch biological determinism as being superior to environmental influence insofar as behavioral development is concerned. A 2010 study in the Journal Child Development and a study by the National Academy of Sciences both espouse the idea that some individuals are more susceptible to environmental influence than others are as aforementioned. The article, like other literature on this subject, only adds to the confusion that already exists since critics of the studies that were cited in the article rightly refute the findings on the grounds of their credibility and authenticity. A careful consideration of the ideas espoused by the article and opponents of such ideas shows that the environment acts on an individualââ¬â¢s innate abilities to produce a unique pattern of beha vior for every individual. Briefing paper on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon
Briefing paper on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon Is the denial of rights such as the right to education and health mortifying to the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon? Introduction Late in the 1940ââ¬â¢s Palestinians from the north of Palestine were forced to leave their homes due to attacks from Israeli military forces and ethnic cleansing. This briefing is directed at the Deputy High Commissioner, Koreas Ms. Kyung-wha Kang and the Assistant High Commissioners for Protection and Operations, Erika Feller and Judy Cheng-Hopkins who are directly concerned with the issues that have been elucidated on in the paper.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Briefing paper on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This briefing will be delivered at a presentation with the concerned departments on the findings of research based on the current predicaments that the Palestinian refugees are facing. The paper aims to elucidate on the plight of the refugees and the gains that would be attained from application of their full rights as well as some practical solutions to the predicaments. It is pertinent to note that many homes were destroyed during the period so the Palestinians were forced to flee into Lebanon. During the first few months of their stay, they were provided with food and shelter by Lebanese farmers. They were also assisted by the LRCS (International League of Red Cross Societies) which provided tents, food and clothes while the Lebanese Government gave some form of backing by contributing free depots, protection, warehouses, manual labour as well transportation (Betts Loescher, 2010, p. 155). Aid was also provided from various private and public sources. Background of the issue In the 1950ââ¬â¢s, the Sunni politicians demanded for a greater Muslim role in the Lebanese government. This together with the Sunniââ¬â¢s support for Nasserââ¬â¢s calls for Pan-Arabism led to the outbreak of a civil war in 1958. From th en onwards, the Israelis persistently refused to implement the UN General Assembly resolution 194 (Betts Loescher, 2010, p. 155). This part petitioned for the refugees to be allowed to go back to their domiciles and subsist in harmony with their fellow citizens at the earliest practicable time and that they should be compensated for loss of property resulting from the confrontations (Aristide, 1986, p. 160). The attitude of the Lebanese government then changed. So as to put off eternal relocation, the regime went ahead and placed callous limitations on the immigrants (Betts Loescher, 2010, p. 155). No housing development was allowed. Work permits for Palestinians suddenly became unobtainable in 1962. Betts and Loescher (2010, p. 155) stated that ââ¬Å"martial law was also imposed on the refugee camps which resulted in the 1969 uprising in the campsâ⬠.Advertising Looking for report on political sciences? This improved the conditions for the refugees. The Palestinian immigrants obtained some rights such as freedom of movement, residency as well as labour rights. They were also granted the rights to defend themselves in Lebanon (Betts Loescher, 2010, p. 155). Aristide (1986, p. 160) elucidated that the rights ââ¬Å"tied to the Cairo agreement never became national legislationâ⬠. The PLO was forced out of Lebanon after the 1982 invasion by the Israelites. Consequently, the situation for the Palestinian immigrants worsened. Hostility against Palestinian immigrants was among the main facets all through the warfare (Aristide, 1986, p. 160). The current situation in various sectors Education Aristide (1986, p. 160) asserts that the ââ¬Å"Palestinian refugees are denied access to Lebanese public schoolsâ⬠. On the other hand, Betts and Loescher (2010, p. 155) designate that ââ¬Å"the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA, 1949), offers secondary education in Lebanon to counter the effects of restrictions placed by the Lebanese government and the high cost of private schoolsâ⬠. This is mostly because they are beyond the means of Palestinian immigrants. It operates around 70 primary education institutions as well as three secondary institutions in Lebanon. However, most of the facilities in UNRWA operated schools are quite pitiable and the schools are over occupied and have limited or no recreational space. In a bid to take care of their spouses, majority of the scholars were coerced into ceasing their learning activities and seek for employment (Aristide, 1986, p. 160). The schools therefore, have very high dropout rates. Employment Palestinians without identity documents are unable to sit for the intermediate schooling exam if they do not have any recognized ID, hence, locking out many children from accessing secondary education. The Lebanese statute allows only skilled individuals from the Lebanese professional associations to partake in any profession (Kunz, 1973, p. 138). Such associations can be easily established but for foreigners they are regulated by reciprocity clause which states that non-citizens cannot form associations (Kunz, 1973, p. 138). Kunz (1973) further stated that: The major sources of income for Palestinian refugees are employment in shops and institutions within the refugee camps; employment in UNRWA and its affiliated institutions; remittances from relatives who work abroad; employment in Palestinian organisations and associations and employment in agriculture and Lebanese companiesââ¬â¢. This is because a number of ministerial decrees prohibit Palestinians from about 72 trades and professions. (p. 138)Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Briefing paper on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon specifically for you for only $16.05 $1 1/page Learn More Healthcare The Palestinian health centres and shops in the camps of immigrants have been prominent hunting points for the Lebanese police officers (Mason, 2000, p. 248). Since the early 1990ââ¬â¢s, the Lebanese police have been arresting Palestinian individuals with unlicensed facilities. In 2005, the Lebanese minister of labour granted Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, the right to work in private sector jobs. It is however not known if this decision will make an impact as obtaining a work permit is an expense that very few Palestinian refugees can afford. Immigrants from Palestine are not allowed to use the public medical amenities in Lebanon (Kunz, 1973, p. 138). As a result they are forced to rely on healthcare that is provided by UNWRA or in hospitals that have contracts with them. Due to limited funding and resources they can only provide primary and secondary but not tertiary healthcare. Another healthcare provider is the Palestinian Red Cr escent Society (PRCS). The withdrawal of the PLO has had a negative impact on the scope and quality of services the PRCS provides. Social security All children born to non-ID Palestinian fathers do not receive any identification documents from the Lebanese government nor are they registered with UNRWA therefore remain non-ID as well (Mason, 2000, p. 248). Basing on the implication of the reciprocity clause, individuals from other countries living in Lebanon are allowed to equally enjoy the universal rights just like the other citizens of Lebanon (Good-Gill, 2001, p. 139). But since it is claimed that Palestinians do not belong to any particular state, the clause does not apply to them (Mason, 2000, p. 248). Individuals working in Lebanon from Palestine do not have any right of social defence (Chimni, 2009, p. 16). Restrictions on building Reconstructing of camps that were completely obliterated is forbidden by the Lebanese authorities. Chimni (2009, p. 16) asserted that ââ¬Å"recon struction or building in other camps requires a special permit which is usually not issuedâ⬠. Fighters of the Lebanese government also substantiate that Palestinians are not ferrying any building materials illegally. This is because it is regarded as a serious offense that is punishable by arrest or detention. Property ownership and transfer Persons who do not carry a citizenship certificate offered by the state are prohibited by the presidential decree from owning property in Lebanon. Chimni (1998, p. 361) attests that ââ¬Å"these rulings further imply that non-Lebanese persons can acquire property in Lebanon, but only under certain conditions like- the property should not be in excess of 3000 square metresâ⬠. The property rule in the country of Lebanon proscribes individuals from Palestine from owning property. The law also proscribes the Palestinian kids from inheriting their parentsââ¬â¢ assets (Aristide, 1986, p. 160).Advertising Looking for report on political sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Naturalisation Travelling manuscripts are often issued by the Lebanese regime to ensure that individuals from Palestine are not only working but also living abroad (Mason, 2000, p. 248). There are quite a number of diverse documents which are given to the Palestinians to make use of when travelling around. Immigrants who are registered with both UNWRA and DAPR are given lasting nationality certificates as well as a five year renewable travel certificate. Those indexed with only DAPR are supplied with forms or papers of everlasting nationality and a Laisser Passer with one year validity. These are renewable thrice while refugees who are not registered with any of the two institutions are not issued with any travel documents (Castles, 2003, p. 28). Mason (2000, p. 248) asserts that ââ¬Å"in 1995, the Lebanese ministry of internal affairs imposed an entry and exit visa leaving many Palestinians with travel documents stranded outsideâ⬠. The restrictions have since been eased. The statute of Lebanon has banned the relocation of refugees from Palestine (Mason, 2000, p. 248). In 2003, the president of the then newly formed cabinet stressed that the government will not back down on its insistence that Israeli grants or complies with the right of return of Palestinian refugees and that Lebanon rejects any plans for their resettlement in Lebanon Civil society The government as well as majority of the Lebanese population completely oppose the full integration of the Palestinian refugees in the country. One reason behind this is that they hold the refugees responsible for the civil war outbreak in Lebanon. Castles (2003, p. 28) in his research stated that ââ¬Å"currently Palestinians who are born in Lebanon and the children of Lebanese mothers and Palestinian fathers who are considered Palestinians are not granted Lebanese citizenshipâ⬠. Residency of an everlasting nature is nevertheless approved for any Palestinian female who may get betrothed or affianced to a man from Lebanon. The nongovernmental organizations in Palestine are outlawed from operating in Lebanon. However, PRCS is excluded from this law. In order to operate such an organization the requirement is that they must be first registered as a Lebanese NGO, serve both Palestinians and Lebanese and that majority of the employees must be Lebanese citizens (Castles, 2003, p. 28). Comment Generally the situation in Lebanon has led to worldwide action and petitions from humanitarian organisations (Castles, 2003, p. 28). The Palestinian refugees are greatly mistreated and the Lebanese government has done comparatively little in an effort to make their lives more bearable. In this time and age violation of basic human rights should be a thing of the past. So far the Lebanese government has received criticism from all over the world due to this issue. It is time for the leaders of the country to demonstrate good leadership qualities by amending the laws of the land so as to contribute to the general development of the entire state. Recommendations Given the harsh living conditions of the refugees in Lebanon, the following recommendations would greatly assist in making the life of Palestinian refugees much better: Provision by the Lebanese government of adequate shelter and functioning infrastructure in refugee camps would go a long way in resolving the issue. This will improve the living conditions of the refugees and the government may even benefit from commercial activities that may arise from setting up infrastructure (Richmond, 1993, p. 17). Ensure access to health facilities and affordable medication to all Palestinian refugees especially for the provision of healthcare at tertiary level. The Lebanese government should also make an effort to secure additional support for UNRWAs care programme for severe chronic illnesses (Kunz, 1973, p. 138). The Palestinian children should be allowed to join public schools so as to reap from the benefits of quality educati on hence, boosting their employability. This will benefit the whole country as the number of educated individuals in the entire country will increase. A high level of unemployment has never been beneficial to any region and the same applies to the Palestine region. The number of unemployed individuals ought to be increased. The needs of the most vulnerable members of the Palestinian refugees such as persons with disabilities, women and children should be addressed. They should not be ignored any longer. Food security for refugees should be enhanced. Government spending ought to be concentrated on creating jobs and initiatives for enhancing the food security. The Lebanese government should reconstruct the ongoing emergency relief stores in Nahr el-Bared camp and design a comprehensive Poverty Reduction Strategy. Involving all the stake holders will be beneficial to the cause since they will know what exactly works for them as they consider the other parties that may be involved in th e consultations (Richmond, 2002, p. 707). The government should lift the bans on providing the Palestinians with citizenship in a move to benefit from the labour capital that the Palestinians can offer. Conclusion The situation in Lebanon requires a complete overhaul in the laws and attitude of the entire nation towards Palestinian refugees. The UNHCR should therefore take up the task of liaising with the Lebanese government with the intention of ensuring that their laws are in compliance with international human rights. The changes will also go a long way in ensuring that the rest of the world recognises the fact that some action is being taken to improve on the conditions as well as the living standards of the refugees. It is important for the concerned parties to elucidate on their commitment to embrace the changes that have been recommended. Most of the basic rights that many people enjoy are a luxury and the people ought to be able to reap from the benefits accorded to them by the governments and administrations. At the unfreezing step, the company through its M.D identifies the stagnant nature of growth and the need for there to be an immediate change if the company will achieve its mission goals. As noted by Lewin, the right after identifying the need for change, the second step is jumped unto, which is the transformation step (Jones & Brazzel, 2005). At this step, certain prescribed changes are expected to take place. Indeed, for Pervengines, a number of pragmatic tasks were undertaken as a means to putting the proposed changes into action. For instance early retirement incentives were put on the table to ensure that many of the old staff whose presence in the company was crippling productivity took advantage of it. Furthermore, one of the company sites was closed to enhance voluntary redundancy (Britt & Jex, 2008). In relation to the third step of Lewinââ¬â¢s three step theory which is the refreezing, the changes that had been implemented became a permanent part of the company. This is where organizational culture comes up for discussion because the changes brought about a continuous improvement in the organisationââ¬â¢s culture. It will be noted that organisational culture comprises the deeply accepted values, norms and behaviours that the constituents of the company share (Axelrod, 2000). Present The present state of Pervengines will be analysed using a SWOT analysis, which seeks to bring out the current strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the company. By the close of the SWOT analysis, it is expected that the major characteristics that determine the present position of the company will be clearly outlined. The contributions of past events within the company and its contribution to the

International Business - Essay Example This study deals with the in-depth analysis of a variety of international environmental influences and impact of uncertainties on international business. This paper includes critical analysis of the motivating factors for MNEs to invest in abroad, critical arguments on protectionism, international trade and its benefits for a country, contribution of MNEs and markets in international trade and investment, conflicts between interest of MNEs and host nations. These are main constituent of the paper and analysis on discussion will be made on these areas of international business. MNEs and why the invest abroad Multinational Enterprises are the large business entity that has business activities or registered in multiple countries as business entity in more than one country. The international traders are not multinational entrepreneurs because the main criteria to categorise as MNE is that a firm need to both produce and sell goods and services in more than one country whereas internation al traders generally involved in export and import of goods and services. Multinational enterprises are the main constituents of worldwide globalization. Emerging trend of internalisation of leading domestic business businesses of many countries lead to more foreign direct investment. Internationalisation of firm was initiated by leading businesses of developed countries and they started diversifying into emerging countries in search of more resources and potential markets. Leading businesses of many countries are willing to invest to in foreign markets after saturated penetration in the foreign markets. There are several motivations behind foreign direct investment by the businesses. These motives can be categorised as traditional motivations and emerging motivations. Traditional motivations include the forces that has been drove the leading business to divest into foreign markets. There are four major traditional motives behind foreign direct investment by the companies. Market se eking Business always finds potential market to enjoy demand of their product and services. Therefore, once a business saturated in a particular region or a domestic country then it started finding potential market in the foreign countries. This is one of the most efficient strategies of business expansion as well as sustains increasing demand of product and services. Another reason of market seeking may be that specific product or services requires specific markets for getting appropriate demand or value of the product. Many companies seek foreign markets in this motive. Resource seeking Resource is next most important factor for a business. Driving Essay Example for Free
Driving Essay Realistically as you start your day it is safe to assume that you have no intentions of being in a head on collision and your vehicle being bashed nor did the person who was nonchalantly steering the car with their knee while texting as they were driving. Ultimately I think everyone will come across at least one irresponsible driver in their lifetime. Most of us are fortunate enough to survive these encounters, however not everyone is that lucky. Reckless drivers endanger and destroy peopleââ¬â¢s lives and possessions on a daily basis. Various conducts while driving are considered hazardous. Speeding is a very common practice that can lead to a catastrophe. Drivers that speed are engaging in irresponsible and impetuous conduct. It is especially dangerous to speed in residential neighborhoods where children and pets may be playing. Speeding drivers can also be dangerous in neighborhoods where homeowners in their vehicles are entering and exiting their driveways. Driving at an excessive rate of speed is quite common. This practice is especially dangerous when driving through a residential neighborhood or a school zone. Posted speed limits are not meant to be suggestions; ignore them and you run the risk of being stopped and ticketed by police. Driving Too Slow Some drivers fail to take into account the location where they are driving and drive at the same speed on the highway as they do in a residential area. A better strategy is to look at the posted speed limits and adjust your speed accordingly. Many dangerous driving habits are a result of over confidence. Drivers with years of experience sometimes become dangerous drivers because they are over confident with driving their particular vehicle or a particular route between home and work. They are not prepared when something out of the ordinary occurs.

From the first time I watched this show in Vince McMahon claims that as he was about to announce "Welcome to WrestleMania III," he felt the spirit of his father Vincent J. McMahon, who had died three years earlier. After he made that announcement he introduced Aretha Franklin, who opened the show singing a rendition of "America the Beautiful."[24] The first match of the night was The Can-Am Connection versus Bob Orton and The Magnificent Muraco (with Mr. Fuji). This match ended when Rick Martel gave Don Muraco a high cross-body with Zenk on his hands and knees giving Muraco what Gorilla Monsoon called "A little schoolboy trip from behind" allowing Martel to get the win for his team.[1][25] The next match that aired was Hercules (with Bobby Heenan in his corner) against Billy Jack Haynes in the "Full Nelson Challenge." The match ended when Haynes locked Hercules in the full nelson outside the ring and both were counted out.[1][25] After the match, Bobby Heenan assaulted Haynes by kneeing him in the back, and Haynes chased Heenan into the ring, where Hercules then blindsided Haynes with his chain, hitting him a number of times with it before locking him in a full nelson of his own.[26] The Mixed Tag Team Match between King Kong Bundy and his midget team of Lord Littlebrook and Little Tokyo against Hillbilly Jim and his own midget team of The Haiti Kid and Little Beaver was next. King Kong Bundy's team was disqualified when Bundy attacked Little Beaver, because Bundy was not supposed to be in the ring with the midgets.[17] Bundy attacked Little Beaver after Beaver had "attacked" him on occasion during the match and finally got caught. The "Loser Must Bow" match between Junkyard Dog and King Harley Race (with Bobby Heenan and The Fa... ...hed to it, got on the microphone and said that Volkoff was not going to sing because America is the land of the free and the home of the brave.[26] While the match ensued, Duggan stayed at ringside. When The Iron Sheik locked a camel clutch on "Jumping Jim" Brunzell, Duggan, who was chasing Volkoff around the ring and finally into it, stopped and hit an unsuspecting Sheik across the back with his two by four in front of the referee, resulting in The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff winning the bout by disqualification. In what was billed as the "biggest main event in sports entertainment,"[30] the match pitted WWF Champion Hulk Hogan defending the title against Andrà © the Giant (with Bobby Heenan).[1] Howard Finkel introduced the guest ring announcer, "Mr Baseball" Bob Uecker, who in turn introduced the guest time keeper, Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart. Mount Plesant
Opgave A ââ¬â Mount Pleasant Mount Pleasant from 2005 is an odd little short story. The storyââ¬â¢s narrative technique and language is very unique, because it allows you to see a childââ¬â¢s world from its perspective. The way the story is written makes you think of your own childhood where ghosts and the darkness were the scariest things in the whole wide world. Below, I will analyze this odd little short story, and also give you an interpretation of Mary-Louise Buxtonââ¬â¢s Mount Pleasant where she so curiously write about Elizabeth and her imaginative everyday life. The short story is about a girl Elizabeth who narrates the reader through her every day life. How she discovers the world, how she see her parents and how she interpret things. This short story is not like any other short story, because normally you would have this big climax, with life-changing experiences, and a main theme to tell you how to live your life. This story is ââ¬Å"justâ⬠a little child ââ¬â¢s experiences. The thing that makes this story interesting is the extraordinary first-person narrator. The story is in a way written like some sort of diary by a six-year-old. I think the narrator is about six because she talks about the boy on the picture and he looks around 9-10 not much older than her: ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s maybe nine or ten, not that much older than I amâ⬠The Narrator does not alter the spoken language; it makes the story seem a bit messy but also childish. The language is a big part of this short story because the writer, Mary-Louise, plays with names for objects and concepts, words and the way the different parts of the story are put together.Talking about names, it could be names such as: ââ¬Å"Mammyâ⬠ââ¬Å"The Lookâ⬠ââ¬Å"Granny ââ¬ËOmiââ¬â¢s Duckering Ballâ⬠ââ¬Å"Babbyâ⬠ââ¬Å"Boo Booâ⬠Playing with nicknames like this gives the story a childish feeling, and if Mary-Louise had chosen to use a ââ¬Å"grown-upà ¢â¬ language the story would not have been the same, so this is most likely why this kind of language is chosen. You instantly know the narrator is a child, because the little girl are having a constant urge for being entertained. It is hard for her to focus. It is seen a couple of times in the story, at first it is kind of confusing, but the second time you read the story the meaning of it gets more clear. The best example is when she is talking about her motherââ¬â¢s behavior, in the situation where her dad puts the picture of the little boy on the mantelpiece. Then out of nowhere our protagonist begins talking about the area and how everyone know her and her sister, how the nuns treat them, the different shops in the area, and then followed by a very descriptive list of sweets you can get at the corner in the tub shop: And then thereââ¬â¢s the tub shop on the corner where you can go in and buy big tubs of ice cream, and get sweets out of great big glass jars behind the co unter ââ¬â raspberry ruffles and chewing nuts and chocolate raisins and liquorice sticks and ice cups and strawberry boot laceâ⬠And after talking about the candy she suddenly returns to the time and place she broke loose from. Changing the subjects is confusing, but also what you would expect a child to do. Another thing that keeps it childish is the small ââ¬Ëwake up! ââ¬â¢ line such as Mammy said not to get dirty. â⬠ââ¬Å"We never want to go home. â⬠They spice up the language, and would definitely be something a child would do. It fits very well with the narrative structure of the story If you look at the characters other than the protagonist, you immediately think of the parents. I think it is good writing, because not only is the parents the most important character in a childââ¬â¢s life, it is also two of the most important character in this short story. You get the impression that the mother is the strict one: If I see that bloody picture again at tea timeâ⬠ââ¬Å"Mammy said not to get dirtyâ⬠The father is the exact opposite he is the fun one, the one who lets Elizabeth and her sister stay op late and the less strict one. The father has a more childish language saying Boo Boo and Bobby dazzler. However, the father may not be as sweet and loving as you would expect. One night he takes his two daughters to bed and the dog will no move and instead of calling it by its name he is saying ââ¬Ëdogââ¬â¢ and then he slaps the dog so hard that it gets scared and hide under the table.I did not notice it at first because our narrator does not make it unusually and a big deal, it makes you think that it could have happened before. All through the story I waited for something bad or devastating to happen, but nothing happened, or maybe the real disaster is hidden? In the end it is mentioned that the mother picks up the picture of the boy and puts it back on to the mantelpiece, and you hear Elizabethââ¬â¢s thoughts a bout it dropping down in the night. But earlier in the story it says: ââ¬Å"I run to the mantelpiece and put the picture in the grateâ⬠She had put it there herself, so it could be understood as a symbol of disorder. The night where this happens could very well be the night where Elizabeth sees a ghost walking around and locking her to her bed. When you have a child as your narrator, it is always hard to tell if something really happened, maybe Elizabeth did see this ghost, or it could be that nothing happened during that night, it was just normal behavior from a child who were scared in the dark. It is a hard deal knowing when children speak the truth and when they overreact. This story is definitely not like your typical short story, it is cryptic and you have to read it a few times before you get what is going on. Maybe the message is just how a child sees the world and how you have to remember to dream and imagine, with themes such as being imaginative, childhood and fear. à ¢â¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â [ 1 ]. Marketing Analysis Food For Thought - 1277 Words
Food for Thought Everyone needs to eat, but how we obtain our sustenance varies. Many procure their food by going to their local grocery store, corner market, or even the farmerââ¬â¢s stands and co-ops; while others may hunt, gather, or grow a garden. There is a variety of methods and locations to buy food, however, a large majority of the U.S. purchases their weekly, monthly, and sometimes daily groceries from chain supermarkets or grocery stores. An observational comparison analysis of two chain grocery markets that are considered vastly different lead to some striking similarities as well as some stark contrasts. The observations were held at King Soopers at 2 p.m. and Whole Foods at 4 p.m. on October 30, 2015. King Soopers is part of a larger chain of supermarkets and retail stores that make up the brand Kroger. Kroger is the second largest retailer in the U.S. behind Wal-Mart (Kroger.com). Whole Foods is a large chain supermarket specializing in organic products and is the 30th largest retail chain in the U.S. (Whole Foods Market). Both stores were clean, brightly lit, and busy with shoppers making their selections through the aisles of food and home products. At Kings Soopers there was an apparent gender majority; the distinction of characteristics and behaviors that determine the difference between male or female, most of which were woman. Predominately, the woman appeared to be in their 20ââ¬â¢s and 30ââ¬â¢s, and more than half of them had young children in tow.
